My name is Umair Mirxa. I live and write in Karachi, Pakistan. Inspired by the works of J.R.R. Tolkien, I write fantasy stories steeped in ancient mythologies. More recently, however, I have begun dabbling in other genres as well, including sci-fi, horror, crime/mystery, and romance.
My first published story, ‘Awareness‘, appeared on Spillwords Press on 28th November, 2018. ‘Anonymous‘ in Zombie Pirate Publishing’s anthology, ‘Flash Fiction Addiction‘, is my first story in print. It was released on 15th April, 2019.
The publication of these stories is the realization of a lifelong dream I first saw as a kid. If memory serves, the first book I ever read outside of school was ‘Adventures of a Wishing-Chair‘ by Enid Blyton. I have wanted to be a writer ever since. The casual hope of one day telling stories to the world in my own words, from my own imagination became a goal when my mother bought me ‘Sherlock Holmes: The Complete Novels and Stories‘ by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle as a present for my 13th birthday. By the time I finished reading ‘The Hobbit‘ and ‘The Lord of the Rings‘ by J.R.R. Tolkien, the desire to be a published author had transformed into a roaring, burning ambition.
I have been building my own fantasy world and populating it with characters, creatures, and stories ever since. Until such a day as it is ready to be revealed, I write drabbles, flash fiction, and short stories. In addition to the two mentioned above, I have had stories accepted in anthologies by Blood Song Books, Black Hare Press, Iron Faerie Publishing, Clarendon House Publications, and Fantasia Divinity Magazine and Publishing.
When I’m not writing, I like to divide my time fairly evenly between reading novels and comic books, playing video games, listening to music, and watching movies and TV shows. I am also a Gooner, a long-suffering fan of Arsenal Football Club, living in the hope they might start winning trophies again one day.
I have been an event co-ordinator, a teacher, a content writer, a digital marketer, and an online magazine’s founder/editor. I love everything to do with mythology, fantasy, and history, and wish dragons were real with all my heart. I have dabbled in graphic design, and more recently, have been trying to learn digital drawing and painting with varying degrees of failure.
My closest friends all insist there will come a day when I will abandon civilized life as we know it. They claim I will go off to live in a cottage by a lake in a forest somewhere, and spend the rest of my days writing stories and being haunted by my own characters. I can assure you, while it is not far off, such a day has not come yet.
Until then, and hopefully beyond, I hope to entertain you with my stories.
Thank you for visiting my little corner on the internet.
